Sloped Ceiling Room Layout in magicplan: A Simple How-To Guide

Written by Benjamin Brown | Sep 11, 2024

Hey folks, in this guide, I’m going to show you two ways you can draw or measure a room with sloped or slanted ceilings using the magicplan app. Whether you’re dealing with tricky attic spaces or any room with those uneven ceilings, these methods will help you get the job done right. Let’s get started!

Method 1: Drawing Sloped Ceilings with magicplan (Visual Representation)

1. Start Your Session: Open up magicplan and get your session started with the Auto-Scan feature or by drawing the full walls of the room.
2. Handle the Sloped Section: When you get to the part of the room with the sloped ceiling, things can get a little tricky. For those lower sections, adjust your walls to capture the slant correctly.
3. Mark Odd Features: If there are unique features like pillars or windows in the sloped section, make sure to mark them. In the video, Ben uses photos of a pillar and windows to accurately place these elements in the plan.
4. Add Lines for the Sloped Ceilings: Next, add lines that represent your sloped ceilings. Use any pillars or fixed objects as reference points. For instance, the ‘square pillar’ option can help if you have pillars. Ensure they’re oriented correctly in the room.
5. Use Bluetooth Laser for Precision: If you have a Bluetooth laser handy, connect it to magicplan. This tool makes positioning pillars or other elements easy. Simply select your wall, align your laser, and the app will automatically position the elements for you.
6. Final Adjustments: Double-check your measurements and placements. Use the Bluetooth laser to drop additional points if needed for precise placement.

Note: This method, as shown in the video, is more about creating a visual representation of the sloped ceiling. It helps indicate that there’s a sloped ceiling in that area but doesn’t capture the actual height. It’s great for visualizing the layout but doesn’t provide specific elevation details.

Method 2: Adding Sloped Ceilings Using the “Elevation” Object (Actual Heights)

For a more precise layout that includes the actual height of the sloped ceiling, use the “Elevation” object in magicplan. Here’s how:

1. Select the Room: Start by selecting the room where you want to add the sloped ceiling. Tap on the room and go to the ‘Add Object’ option.

2. Choose “Elevation”: In the object menu, select the ‘Elevation’ object. This element allows you to mark elements like sloped ceilings and roofs by defining the heights of different points in the room.

3. Set Heights and Positions: Adjust the heights and positions of the “Elevation” object to match your sloped ceiling. You can input these values manually or adjust them visually within the app.

4. Fine-Tune Placement: Use the controls to position the elevation accurately in your layout. You can tweak the placement to make sure everything lines up with your existing walls and features.

5. Review Your Layout: Double-check that the sloped ceiling aligns correctly with your room’s dimensions. Make sure all elements are in the right place before finalizing the layout.

Note: This method using the “Elevation” object is for accurately capturing the height of the sloped ceiling. It provides a detailed representation of the room’s actual dimensions, which is crucial for precise planning and execution. For more information on how to use this method, please refer to our guide, “How to Add a Sloped Ceiling and Roof.”

And that’s it! Those are the two ways you can handle drawing or measuring sloped ceilings in the magicplan app. Whether you’re going the manual route or using the elevation options, you’ve got the tools to tackle those challenging spaces. Give these methods a try on your next project, and you’ll have those tricky rooms mapped out in no time. Thanks for tuning in, and happy planning!
